Advantages of Wood - A Renewable Resource

DURABLE AND LONG LASTING
Wood products last for generations and wood is completely biodegradable at the end of its useful life. In fact, the floors of George Washington’s home were made with pitch pine wood, and are still walked on today and admired for their beauty. Some homes in Europe constructed using wood are still in use, even after more than 800 years. With good design and correct construction, structural wood needs no chemicals or treatments to achieve a long life. Wood is resistant to heat, frost, corrosion and pollution. A long life cycle is, perhaps, the best method of conservation because not only are resources conserved, but the energy actually used to create new products is also conserved.

AVAILABILITY
Because forests are sustainable resources, they are constantly reproducing. Wood is available in abundance in many varieties all over the world. Our Honduras Pitch Pine is one of the most ecologically-friendly woods being harvested today, and ethical forest management practices will continue to allow us to enjoy the advantages of wood. ENERGY-EFFICIENT
Along with durability, wood products are energy efficient. It takes significantly less energy to harvest and mill wood products than to process other materials such as steel, aluminum, concrete or plastic. Wood is a natural insulator and is proven to be much more efficient than manmade materials for a variety of insulation purposes. For example, an external wall constructed using timber that is half as thick as a concrete or brick wall can provide double the insulation value. Also, due to its thermal properties wood helps maintain an optimum humidity balance, helps a room to warm more quickly, and naturally keeps condensation to a minimum. Considering the growing importance of energy efficient building, wood should continue play an important role.

RENEWABLE
Unlike most floor coverings, wood floors come from a natural resource that is sustainable. Wood is an abundant, natural, sustainable resource. The same forests that provided this renewable resource for us for centuries are still producing wood today which is a testament to the renewability of wood. With strong ecological forest management practices these forests will continue to provide materials for years to come.
